Bicycle route from Oudeschans

A bicycle route through time from Fortress Oudeschans.
From the Oudeschans Fortress, start the bicycle route into the province of Groningen. Oudeschans originated around the lock Bellingwolderzijl. At the time, this was located on the waters of the Dollard. In the 16th century, a fortress was built by Count Lodewijk van Nassau. The fortress played an important role in the fight against Spanish power. There was water both inside and outside the entrenchment, which provided a strong position in the defense. After construction of the dike, the entire area came dry. As you ride this bike route, imagine what it was like in the old days. You imagine how it feels with lots of water around you and the threat of the enemy that could be nearby. You will be treated to beautiful vistas. Both over the vast meadows and the waters. In the villages you can imagine how it must have once been. The museum in Bellingwolde and the Burcht Wedde in Wedde are also well worth a visit. You will pass the Westerwolde Aa and drive along the Pekel Aa with eventually water on both sides of the road. Back at the museum Vesting Oudeschans you can reminisce while enjoying tea or coffee.
