Bicycle route from Zeist across the Utrecht Hill Ridge

Route past castles, grasslands and through forests.
From the Vogelbescherming store, you will leave into the surroundings of Zeist. Still in the center of Zeist, you will pass Slot Zeist. The castle consists of 3 buildings and a moat built in the 17th century. The surrounding area is known as the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. This area was formed in the last ice age. Thick layers of sand and gravel were deposited by the rivers and later pushed up by the ice to form moraines. This is where the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is one of them. Warming caused forests to grow. However, these were cut down by man in order to practice agriculture and cattle breeding. On the barren areas heath and sandy soils could thus arise. The first part of the route shows more grasslands and polders. The second half consists mostly of forest. Birds do not all fly the same height. Many birds fly no higher than 150 meters. The Hillside has unusual species. Step down and look up quietly. They are probably looking at you, too. Birds also see ultraviolet and therefore see the world differently from humans. Enjoy a cup of coffee along the way and listen for the males whistling to mark territory.
