Fine bike ride through central Limburg

The starting point of this route is at the church village of Herkenbosch, part of the municipality of Roerdalen. On the border with Germany, the bike route passes Nature Park Maas-Swalm-Nette, where forests, moors, lakes and heaths have provided an attractive habitat for amphibians, among others. The tour passes Swalmen, a beautiful area with remnants from Roman times and memories of the French period. After the hamlet of Beesel, we cross the A73 and the Asseltse plassen in sight, as an overflow of the Meuse River. These ponds, up to 30 meters deep, have undergone major improvements for the benefit of flora and fauna. It has also become the habitat of the badger, which thrives in such an area with pools and wooded banks. In 2005, the final finishing touches took place in the area, with bays and lagoons where natural riparian vegetation developed on a larger scale. The route continues towards Roermond, the former Hanseatic city with an illustrious past. Roermond was largely shot to pieces in WWII, but beautifully restored with the main attractions being the Market Square with the beautiful St. Christopher Cathedral, the Town Hall and also various other buildings, squares and parks. Via various church villages with beautiful names like Maalbroek and Asenray we reach the end of this 51-kilometer route.
