Magnificent bike ride through a watery part of North Brabant

The tour has a starting point in Klundert, a Brabant village with a long history when it comes to flooding and flooding. In 1421, the area was plagued by the St. Elisabeth Flood but after the construction of the dike around the Hollands Diep, the foundations were laid for the current structure of the fortified town, which continued to be regularly plagued by battling armies in later centuries. The route runs along the Hollands Diep, important artery between Antwerp and Rotterdam with a lot of shipping traffic. After about 8 kilometers we reach the town of Willemstad, at the junction with the Volkerak, where many French influences can be seen, including the Kruithuis, product of Napoleon Bonaparte. The route turns south here, heading inland through Heijningen and Zevenhuizen, through the Dintel River basin. The Dintel was in earlier times an estuary, but is now reduced to a small, meandering river with beautiful vegetation along its attractive banks. Next we reach the hamlet of Barlaque, municipality of Moerdijk, and named after a creek landscape that characterizes this area in a particularly distinctive way and has several names attached to it. For example, the Mooie Keene and the Verlamde Vaart are remnants from the time of the former water boards that operated here.
