Short route in the vicinity of Wageningen
Cycling along the Lower Rhine and through The Blue Room.
From The Depot start a short route. Don't forget to bring some change for the ferry. You will ride past the botanical gardens through fairytale-like surroundings. You will pass the Belmonte Arboretum, formerly an estate, on the Wageningse berg. As you feel yourself descending you will see the Lower Rhine appear before you. The ferry will take you across. You will cycle along the dike and get to see the most beautiful views. Parallel to the water you cross past Opheusden to the nature reserve De Blauwe Kamer. Here the water of the Lower Rhine has a lot of influence. Nature is constantly on the move. De Blauwe Kamer is a paradise for bird lovers. Spoonbills, egrets and cormorants are regularly spotted. Via the Valleikanaal, also called De Grift, you drive through the area regionally called Het Binnenveld. Nature here is green and rich. Wet areas used to be covered with blue grassland, which is therefore not common nowadays. This part is therefore protected by the State Forestry Administration.
