The Bergherbos
See one of the largest castles in the Netherlands and enjoy the view in the Bergherbos forest.
The bike route starts from Loerbeek, a village of 500 inhabitants. The name comes from Lobrick which means rich in open meadows in the forest. The place may not be big, the number of activities is. From getting lost in a maze to viewing the Bensel mill to donkey rides, there is plenty to do. When you get on your bike you will encounter much more. That the surroundings in Gelderland are beautiful is obvious. At Stroombroek, due to the sand excavations, there are opportunities to take a dip or just paddle along the way. Kasteel Huis Bergh in 's-Heerenberg is one of the largest castles in the Netherlands and dates back to the 13th century. The castle has a large moat and a real drawbridge. You can even receive the knighthood or be appointed court lady. You will pass the Bergherbos which is surrounded by organic fields. This forest, also called Montferland, is located on a moraine so you can clearly see it from a distance. Buzzards, falcons and 70 more species of birds, badgers and deer live here. There is a watchtower from which you have a magnificent view of the surroundings.
