The silence of eastern Groningen
With a breath of fresh air through the quiet Blue Heart of Groningen
When cycling through the polders of Eastern Groningen you will encounter mostly farmland. If you like vast plains with infinite views, this route is for you. But since a few years there is now a lot more to see in this part of Groningen above Winschoten. The Oldambtmeer is a newly created lake, which was first farmland. At eight square meters, the lake is as big as Sneekermeer, making it the largest stretch of water in Groningen. The 350 acres of land surrounding it is reserved for nature and housing. Many of the lots are still empty because far fewer people have come to live there than originally expected. For nature, this is actually only good news. The huge uninhabited area and space offers visitors an oasis of tranquility.
With so much water, a lot of different bird species come to breed and pass through, including very rare species. But larger raptors such as the hawk, buzzard and harrier, are also welcome guests in this nature reserve. Among the surrounding moraines, flanks and valleys live stoats, foxes and a variety of rodents. For those seeking peace and quiet, the trail is an excellent choice!
