The South Gelderland Valley

The Netherlands has a rich history. The Gelderse Valley between Arnhem and Ede is proof of that. Not only is the area full of medieval castles, the thickest giant sequoias and mysterious burial mounds thousands of years old, but it was also the biggest battleground in World War II. Operation Market Garden, which unfortunately was not entirely successful took place here, resulting in the hunger winter. The view of the Rhine and the Betuwe at Westerburg was an important strategic point. The war is long gone, but the view there is still beautiful. And to say it is beautiful there is only an understatement. One of the surrounding villages, Oosterbeek, was recently voted the greenest village in Europe. New buildings in this area have been placed among greenery that has been there for hundreds of years, moss grows on the roofs and new trees have been planted everywhere. The area around the villages consists of wet peat bogs, grasslands, woods and moors. The wet area with lots of low vegetation gives a free feeling thanks to the vast plains. Especially characteristic is the old buildings that lie against the edges of the many dams. Grab your bike and come enjoy this beautiful route!
