Tough bike ride around Aagtekerke in Zeeland

After starting in Aagtekerke, a typical Zeeland church village, we set course for Oostkapelle, a well-known seaside resort and also known for Kasteel Westhove, a castle dating from the thirteenth century, which is largely freely accessible and which also houses the fascinating nature museum Terra Maris. After Oostkapelle, the tour first continues along the coast towards Vrouwenpolder before turning right, right along the beautiful Veerse Meer with its unique flora and fauna. The area was heavily cultivated by the Forestry Commission after World War II and has become interesting for cyclists and hikers. Then we reach Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland and a fine location to recover from the first half. Middelburg has its origins in the ninth century and has suffered many wars and rebellions over the centuries. Main attractions anno 2019 are the beautiful Town Hall and the Abbey, with its 91-meter high tower, called the Lange Jan. This complex also houses the Zeeland Museum. In addition, the city offers numerous other national monuments that warrant a visit. The bike ride continues through colorful place names such as Poppendamme and St. Jan ten Heere, before reaching the coast again at Domburg with well-known attractions such as the Bathing Pavilion and the Town Hall.
