Route through Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

From Sluis, you go right on the water. You meander along De Kanaalweg toward the sea. Parallel to this canal runs the border with Belgium but you do not pass it. Before entering Cadzand you will pass Het Zwin nature reserve. A Zwin is also called an inland sea. Het Zwin is a beach plain behind the dunes that is in open connection with the sea. Thanks to the alternation of salt and fresh, between wet and dry, and clay and sand, the area has a great variety of vegetation. Until past Cadzand you drive behind the dunes but before Nieuwvliet-Bad you enter the dunes. This is the Verdronken Zwarte Polder, a so-called slufter or broken dune row. Along sea and dunes it continues to the Breskens lighthouse which dates from 1868. The lighthouse is open on Saturdays and Sundays from April through October. In the summer months also on Fridays. In Breskens, the Fisheries Museum is located in the harbor. The Westerschelde has been dredged for over a century to keep shipping possible. Via the Bierkreek and Het Groote Gat, it goes to Oostburg. On the Watertoren, a white tower 55 meters high, large murals can be seen. Through the sea clay landscape, the last part of this beautiful route goes back to Sluis.
